Zagat Reviews
Restaurants: Coffee Shops
July 24, 2008

With connoisseur-quality coffee shops taking the city by storm, you don't have to look far for some choice brew. The Zagat Gourmet Shopping and Entertaining Guide lists a few spots it says are miles above the corner Starbucks with pedigreed beans and sophisticated brewing technology. NY1 profiled two East Village coffee shops.

Abraco Espresso
86 East 7th Street
212-388-9731
www.abraconyc.com

Zagat hails this "new-kid-on-the-block" as a "coffee-lover's dream." Patrons say the espresso is "delicious, strong" and pulled "the way God intended." The "excellent pastries" are a big hit served up by "friendly" staff. It adds the standing-only coffee bar and an absence of decaf are part of the "truly European experience."

Out of a possible 30, Abraco Expresso pulls out a 27 for quality, a 19 for display and a 23 for service. Zagat says prices are moderate.

Mercury Dime
246 East 5th Street
1-212-533-3295

Zagat gives high marks to this "homey" East Village coffeehouse. The survey notes the "expertly pulled" espresso is made with "esoteric" and "seriously aromatic Ethiopian unwashed beans". Some extras include”fresh” juices, “made-to-order sandwiches” and free “WiFi.”

Mercury Dime has yet to be rated in the Zagat Guide, but the survey says the prices here are also moderate.
