Electrical Fire Burns Down Little Ferry Family-Run Press
July 24, 2008

Fire officials say an electrical malfunction caused a fire that destroyed a local family-run printing press Thursday morning. NY1's Jessica Fragoso filed the following report.

Some employees of Yes Press in Little Ferry showed up to work Thursday morning, only to learn that the business was destroyed.

A charred, roofless, emptied building remains where the family-run company stood at 20 Poplar Avenue for more than 30 years. Fire officials say the blaze was caused by an electrical malfunction.

Nick Cioffi, one of the co-owners of Yes Press, says he's grateful no one was injured.

"That was our concern last night, with everyone being around. We knew no one was in the building that time at night," said Cioffi.

Little Ferry Fire officials say they arrived at the scene at 1 a.m., and units from several other towns also responded. They battled the blaze for several hours.

"There was a heavy smoke condition coming out of the front of the building,” said Little Ferry Fire Deputy Chief Marty Loesner. “Within minutes, the fire extended out the roof. We had some air conditioning units collapse through the roof of the structure, which then began a gas bed fire. We had the utility companies come and secure all the utilities, and then we continued to extinguish the fire. We had the fire under control at about 6 a.m."

Cioffi says Yes Press is a very tight-knit company. Some employees have been there for as long as 25 years, and he hopes to have everyone working again soon.

"We're going to have some kind of gathering today, with the close-knit part of the family and see where we're going to go from here. We've been printers all our life, and I'm probably going to be printing for the rest of my life," said Cioffi.
