Vena Cava Walks Like An Egyptian, Jonathan Saunders Has Love Affair With Color
Designers of Vena Cava and Jonathan Saunders showcased their colorful, bold spring 2009 lines in Chelsea. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report. At the Chelsea Museum of Art, Egyptian-inspired clothing was the main exhibit at Vena Cava's fashion week presentation
"This spring we were inspired by 'Egyptomania,' the Egyptian craze that took over America in the 1970s," said designer Lisa Mayock of Vena Cava. "And you’re going to see that in the color pallet and our prints and in a lot of the symbolism."
The clothing is a mix of African influences and traditional sportswear, with neutral, sun-bleached colors accented by sculpted hardware.
Vena Cava designers teamed up with Via Spiga for the footwear.
"It was great designing the shoes and designing what we though Vena Cava and Via Spiga would be if they had a baby," said Mayock.
In those shoes, walking like an Egyptian has never looked so chic.
A few blocks away, designer Jonathan Saunders's show seemed to be "somewhere over the rainbow." He said working on this collection was like having a love affair with color.
"I just wanted to work on things that I loved," said Saunders. "I love textiles, I love color and it started from that point. It’s as simple as that."
Bright blues, yellows and pinks radiated the runway in sculpted, ruffled fabrics.
"I think it was more feminine than the collections I've done previously and I kind of liked working like that this way," said Saunders. "Especially when you see the girls' reactions when they try it on and it's the volume and playfulness of it. It's really exciting, a nice thing to work with."
It's all fun to work with, fun to look at and looks like fun to wear.
