The Orient Meets Park Avenue For Khan; Mendel Goes Colorful For Spring
Two designers show off the true art in fashion by creating their own fabrics, all made by hand. NY1's Jill Scott filed the following report from the luxurious shows of Naeem Khan and Gilles Mendel.Kimono shapes and origami pleats, but with a taste of the Big Apple. This spring, East meets West for designer Naeem Khan.
“It's handmade, it’s color, it’s the Orient, it’s the inspiration of Diana Vreeland, Tina Chow; It's the Orient meets Park Avenue,” said Khan.
Like the Japanese cherry blossom, this season starts off bare and busts into booming blossoms of color.
Soft whites and neutrals offset bright tones and bold prints, in exotic 3D shapes and textures that make quite a statement.
“I think it was fabulous, as always, and I love the color. You can see a lot of color and a lot of embroidery,” said entrepreneur Ivana Trump. “I love the red dress, pink-embroidery dress, and minis, and gorgeous coats, so I think the collection was just fantastic.”
On the runway, the clothes always look beautiful, but only when you get up close, can you really appreciate what it takes to put a collection together. This collection took 300 sets of hands to make all this detailed embroidery. And that's where you can see the true art in fashion.
On the subject of art, over at the Chelsea Art Museum, designer Gilles Mendel, exhibited his remarkable talent at a presentation of his spring 2009 collection.
“The spring collection was a lot of fun. It was inspired by colors and textures of flowers; in fact, there was a fabulous book by Christopher Beane, of extraordinary colors of flowers, that really pushed me to experience this new way of going for spring,” said Mendel.
And like soft petals, these creations are delicate and fine. Deconstructed fabrics, accordion pleats, soft draping silk, and let’s not forget his furs. Mendel knows how to manipulate fabrics to create dimension and distinction.
As for his palette, rose, hydrangea and soft orchid, colors that are like the perfect bouquet, vibrant, rich and full of life.
How appropriate that his collection was on display at a museum, because admirers rave: "It’s a masterpiece."
