Balloon-Like Dresses Meet Scandal In Calvin Klein Line
The Calvin Klein line celebrated 40 years in the business at a nearly-completed section of the High Line Park on the Lower West Side.
Calvin Klein is known for elegance but is also known for controversial ads.
Attendee and actress Brooke Shields famously said as a teenager in one such ad that nothing came between her and her Calvin Klein jeans.
“For me it was a turning point in my life,” said Shields. “I was very lucky to be involved with something that was very fresh and very exciting and I got to be there.”
Tony-award winning actor Alan Cumming loved the progressive ads.
"He was one of the first people when a designer suddenly was in the mainstream and he also brought homoeroticism into the mainstream, I'd say," said Cumming.
The Calvin Klein brand is still raising eyebrows over a banned TV ad featuring Eva Mendes, in which the actress bares her nipples.
“The funny part was that it was truly an accident when we were shooting it,” said Mendes, “but it just looked so beautiful that we all went, you know, let’s go for it.”
Creative director Francisco Costa presented the Calvin Klein woman's line in his studio in the Fashion District.
"The whole collection has this sense of travel, and every piece packs flat, which is quite fun,” said Costa. “And I think it’s fun for a woman also, to be able to be dressed really well for whichever occasion and being able to travel."
White shirt dresses that bring to mind starched formal shirts of white-tie-and-tails marched down the runway. Metallic balloon dress floated during the show. Some dresses were folded like walking origami.
The dominant color of the line was white silver, punctuated with electric blue.
